Into the Volcano

Into the Volcano takes visitors to the interior of the Earth. Presented at the Perlan Museum's custom-built planetarium in Reykjavík, the experience is a geological journey beneath the Snæfellsnes Peninsula: a descent through rock strata, a passage through an 1,100 °C magma chamber, and an eruption back to the surface through an active volcano. Where science often stays abstract, the experience makes it physically tangible, turning real geophysical data into a multisensory journey built in Unreal Engine.

I directed the film, and worked closely on the visual development and on defining the pipeline, from geological capture to the final immersive sequences.

The immersive screen is a continuous LED surface wraps the audience 270° vertically and 360° horizontally, while a glass floor extends the image beneath their feet. The image surrounds rather than faces the viewer, which meant rethinking every sequence for a space you move through rather than watch.

Developed in close collaboration with Perlan's creatives and geologists team, the experience is grounded in geophysical principles specific to Iceland. Eruptions were filmed on location in 360° by drone, and photogrammetry scanned rocks and cliff faces to rebuild the formations along the descent. Assembled in Unreal Engine, these elements create a world that is at once documentary and immersive, where volumetric light, fluid simulation and particle behavior follow real physical rules.

The film is a permanent installation at the Perlan Museum in Reykjavik, screened daily.
