The PORTALS tour marked the start of the collaboration between Normal Studio and Melanie Martinez. I directed all of the original video content that ran throughout the show, the visual backbone of a performance that plays the PORTALS album front to back, closer to a visual performance than a traditional concert.
Every piece of content was built in Unreal Engine. That choice let us support the storytelling right alongside the music and fully embrace Melanie Martinez's universe: the rebirth of the Cry Baby persona as a fairy-like creature with four eyes and a rabbit face, moving through a forest world that is at once dreamlike and unsettling. My work was to give that universe shape in imagery, an enveloping digital world where the video becomes the very core of the staging.
The content came together in close collaboration with Melanie: the goal was to create visuals faithful to her aesthetic, extending her universe and carrying the album's narrative across the whole show. That universe filled with creatures, a dragon among them, that paced the story.
